Green Bay Native’s Scripts Head Toward Filming: Film and Music Producer, Hulon Crayton II of Cold Weather Films, Inc and Premier Booking & Management

10:01 pm

Freewire (Press Release)~ October 24, 2008, London, UK, Green Bay native Adam Thompson has two screenplays that have signs of being headed for production.

A sports columnist for the Sheboygan Press, Thompson wrote “Worthless,” budgeted at $5.5 million, and “Dead Dog,” budgeted at $19 million.

They’re to be produced by Premier Booking & Management Co. along with Cold Weather Films Inc., owned by Madison native Hulon Crayton II.

“The films are financed in full,” Crayton said. “I cannot divulge all the names or businesses sinking capital into the projects, due to confidentiality agreements.”

Names he did reveal: Ralph Cooper, a nightclub owner in New York; IMO Investment (for European entrepreneurs); and Dr. Hulon Crayton, his father.

Sight unseen, “Worthless” sounds like it could tickle funnybones: Four guys pretend to form a band, all the better to pick up women; the band, named Worthless, becomes a sensation.

Thompson, a 1994 graduate of Green Bay Southwest High School, said he started “Worthless” in 2006 and revised it at least a dozen times.

“In the last few years, I’ve learned so much on how to write, and not write, a screenplay,” he said. “I’ve gone back and altered many things to make it more production-ready.

“It’s so much more difficult than I thought it would be when I started page 1 of ‘Worthless’ as a hobby. But it’s been fulfilling, as well, especially now that it appears to be on the cusp of being produced.”

Filming and casting of “Worthless” would take place in Milwaukee.

Casting “will likely be late January or early February if we are on schedule,” Crayton said.

“Dead Dog” is an action feature in which a U.S. soldier stationed in Afghanistan pretends to be dead for days when the village he’s stationed in is overrun by extremists. The production start goal is late 2009.

Wisconsin’s tax incentives for filming in the state played a role, Crayton said.

“With a tax incentive considerably higher or more competitive than Hollywood, it is an opportunity that I, nor my fellow above-the-line crew cannot pass up,” Crayton said. “Many filmmakers are going outside of Southern California to produce films, and the trend is moving forward in that direction.”

Crayton’s companies are based in Panama City, Fla., and Los Angeles.

Thompson, 32, said he connected with Crayton’s Premier Booking & Management by luck.

“I had been searching for potential production companies and/or literary agencies to help get things moving,” Thompson said. “As they say, you can’t get down after being rejected countless times. And so I did not.”

He stumbled on the Web site of Crayton’s company.

“This summer, I e-mailed him loglines and synopses of both ‘Worthless’ and ‘Dead Dog,’ then later the screenplays,” Thompson said. “He liked both of them right away, and off we went.”

From Mahalia to King, A Song with Historical Ties that Embodies the Obama Presidency: "Tell Them About the Dream"

6:57 pm

Laura Vecchione is a Boston and New York based singer and songwriter who has written a song “Tell Them About the Dream,” that embodies the unifying spirit of the Obama presidency and articulates the historic thread that led to this moment. Thousands of people have already watched it on YouTube and have urged her to get this song and video out for consideration in the inaugural celebration and to wider media outlets.

“I was amazed to hear President Elect Obama mention every moment in history that we had put in the video at his acceptance speech in Chicago, from the bridge in Selma, to the Berlin Wall coming down!” said Laura about the video she and Ralph Modica of Phase 1 Digital in New York had made prior to the Obama victory to inspire with its message of hope and unity.

Vecchione was inspired to write the song by the story of Gospel singer Mahalia Jackson calling out to Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. “Tell them about the dream, Martin!” forty-five years to the day that Obama gave his DNC acceptance speech. The song and video were made in a weeks time in three different cities to inspire people before elections. Featured with Vecchione is New Orleans native and Julliard graduate, pianist Jonathan Batiste (Cassandra Wilson). The Gospel background singers were recorded in Boston, and the song was mixed by multi-Grammy winner, Jim Scott (Dixie Chicks, Tom Petty, John Fogerty) in LA. Most everyone involved volunteered their time because of their belief in President Elect (then Senator) Obama and his message of hope and unity.

The song will be included in an upcoming Martin Luther King, Jr. tribute album and charitable website, the Dream On project. An early review of the compilation in the UK Corner with mention of Tell Them About the Dream as a stand out track is here: http://www.eurweb.com/story/eur49066.cfm. WACBIZ has proudly distributed the Dream On! Compilation and Laura Vecchione’s Video to the Grassroots Inaugural Obama Ball. It has also been forwarded to Essence Magazine, and others in consideration of their Martin Luther King’s Birthday and Inaugural Celebrations this January, 2009.

The video can be viewed at the links below. If you would like a DVD or the video file or high quality Mp3 from a YouSendit email, please contact Laura Vecchione (contact information below) immediately.

Jambase:
A SPOT OF HOLIDAY CHEER THAT’LL SPIN YO’ DREIDEL
Not all holiday music sucks it sideways….. “Christmas With The Jews” from Brooklyn’s Elizabeth & The Catapult, a swell pop group that swings with bright charms aplenty.

Skope:
“WTF?! Christmas with the Jews

Listen to “Christmas With The Jews” here

Elizabeth and her crew will play two shows in December with the Spring Standards at the end of December and hit up Maxwells on Jan 22nd with Pete and J. Tour dates below!

The Village Voice:
“Elizabeth & the Catapult have managed to hurl themselves pretty far through word-of-mouth buzz. The unsigned local trio, led by vocalist Elizabeth Ziman and her Aimee Mann–like drawl, has built a loyal local fanbase via jazzy, buoyant pop songs; they’re now making frequent appearances on NPR’s Studio 360. Check out jaunty earworm “Momma’s Boy,” off their self-titled EP—these three won’t be flying under the radar for long.”

Take a clear and powerful voice, add a memorable melody and set it to unique, sophisticated harmonies, and what emerges is Elizabeth & the Catapult’s singular sound. At a time when so much music is saturated with familiarity, the band’s style, which Northeast Performer describes as “a mixture of organic jazz, rock and pop,” is a welcome departure from a well-beaten path. Comprised of Elizabeth Ziman (vocals, keys), Danny Molad (drums), and Peter Lalish (guitar), Elizabeth & the Catapult came into existence in 2004.

Recent Press Love:
NPR Best CD’s of 2006- “Discoveries: Elizabeth and the Catapult”
Billboard Underground Artist of the Month
Billboard Emergency Artist to Watch
Featured at the Aspen Idea’s Festival Studio 360
Featured on WNYC’s Soundcheck

Spin.com Artist of the Day:
“The group utilizes elastic rhythms and dark subject matter that gives it’s songs a slow burn resonance. The sing-a-long swing of “Momma’s Boy” makes it one of the most tuneful kiss-off songs in recent memory. Fan so of Feist should be headover heels in no time.”

Billboard Mag:
“’Momma’s Boy’ is a weight title that will prompt savvy listeners to look for more from this budding act, while rewarding outlets that indulge Ziman by breaking type.”

Boston Globe:
The self-assured Elizabeth and the Catapult prove what a sultry-voiced Greenwich Village habitué with a Norah Jones jones should do: Just let it flow.”

Tour dates!
Dec 27 Washington DC at DC9
Dec 29 Easton MD at Coffee East
Jan 22 Hoboken NJ at Maxwells
Feburary 6 New York At The Nagelberg Theater at Baruch College

In less than two years since their move to New York, Elizabeth and the Catapult has already racked up an impressive list of accomplishments. In May and August of 2006 they were featured in WNYC’s “Soundcheck” as well as PRI’s “Fair Game with Faith Salie” At the end of the year they were dubbed by NPR as “One of the Best Discoveries of 2006.” The Catapult have had residencies at clubs such as the Living Room and Rockwood Music Hall, and after opening for national headliners like Jessie Harris, Kirk Kirkwood (of the Meat Puppets fame), The Wood Brothers (of Medeski, Martin, and Wood), and Amanda Palmer (of The Dresden Dolls) there was enough buzz about them to support a tour and label interest on the West Coast. All of this success also earned them a place as the Billboard Underground Artist for last October.

Bound by a common love of eclectic influences, Elizabeth & the Catapult draws inspiration from artists such as Tom Waits, David Byrne, Joni Mitchell, and Jon Brion—as well as classical influences such as Debussy, Ravel and Chopin. One explanation for the band’s musical diversity is Elizabeth Ziman’s musical background. She was trained as a classical pianist until the age of sixteen. “As a kid, I used to practice all the time…” Elizabeth explains. “But one day I realized that I couldn’t lock myself in a room for eight hours a day…that’s when I started writing and singing.” After that, it quickly became apparent that her vocal abilities rivaled her piano skills. In 2002, Elizabeth successfully auditioned to be a background vocalist for soul-queen Patti Austin and ended up joining her on tour for the next year and a half. Elizabeth’s experience along with Pete and Danny’s folk/rock sensibility piece together to make up the band’s harmonically distinctive pop sound, a sound well reflected in their stylistically diverse new EP.

After a listen to the Elizabeth & the Catapult EP, it is immediately clear that a great deal of thought went into each of the songs’ arrangements. Strings, Horns, Marimba and Synthesizers are all blended together, creating an organic, off-beat style that fans have often referred to as “baroque pop.” The sound of the EP is also shaped by the guerilla-style fashion in which it was recorded. Drummer Danny Molad recorded most of the EP in basements and bathrooms, producing this album, along with Elizabeth, in an incredibly modest home studio. With these limited resources, Elizabeth & the Catapult managed to produce an expertly mixed album. Every note of the EP sounds deliberately placed while there still manages to be an air of effortlessness that penetrates throughout all the songs.

In their recordings as well as live performances, Elizabeth and her band members bring together all their backgrounds and experiences to make music that they themselves enjoy. They acknowledge their amorphous style and readily admit that it probably scares record labels. Even so, Elizabeth asserts that she is “not interested in assigning herself a specific style.” Elizabeth & the Catapult are proud of their ever-changing sound and are committed to keeping their music fresh and creative.

d. WEBSITES: BOO AND BOO TOO | BOO AND BOO TOO MYSPACE
“… their new full-length No Tempo, is a stunner.” – RCRDLBL

IN THE PRESS
“Boo And Boo Too are a Lawrence, Kansas sextet with fang to spare. Specializing in incredibly muscular, sleeves-rolled-up guitar rock that throws up great walls of fly paper melody, their new full-length No Tempo, is a stunner. ‘I Know Nothing’s Alright’ is that album’s towering opener and its squalls, like those in standout ‘No Tempo,’ are some of the most breathtaking I’ve heard in a while…” – rcrdlbl.com

“[No Tempo] continues on as a work of sweltering hard driving claustrophobia intermingled with shoegaze, NYC noise, and a dark myopia reminiscent of The Cure’s Pornography.” – parasitesandsycophants.com

“But what makes No Tempo such a damn listenable record is that Boo and Boo Too are able to draw from several areas of music’s past and blend all their influences into a sound that’s familiar before it’s fresh. It’s loud without being obnoxious, current without being too trendy, and vintage shoegaze without being patronizing. In its entirety, No Tempo is as straightforward an offering of bottled manicisim as one can get.” – baeblemusic.com

“No Tempo plays like a drug-induced, ragged hodgepodge of shoegaze, noise, punk-rock vocals, and droning My Bloody Valentine-esque guitars.” – thankscaptainobvious.net

“Gorgeous and ugly at the same time, No Tempo is filled with bar band moments that evolve into something more fit for an occult megachurch.” – haveyouheard.net

“With expansive vocals over powerful drumming and the occasional stringent riff, Boo and Boo Too builds a trajectory at once wistful and confident, gorgeous and rough, vulnerable and uncompromisingly defiant.” – collegeotr.com
